Plans have been approved to install residential caravans and associated buildings near a city in Sussex. The proposal, aimed at providing accommodation for Gypsy and Traveller communities, was given the green light by Chichester District Council on March 13. The site, spanning approximately 0.
3 hectares, is situated to the east of Marlpit Lane in the parish of Westbourne. The land, currently used for grazing, will be transformed to accommodate two mobile homes, each with an ancillary utility building. The site is well screened by dense planting, providing privacy and reducing the visual impact of the new structures.
The planning application notes: "There is an existing Gypsy and Traveller site to the northeast of the site and part of the site is also used as a residential caravan site. "It is not therefore considered that individually or cumulatively the impact of the proposal on the character of the area would be harmful given the established pattern of development." The proposal, which includes two pitches, is not deemed to be of a scale that would overwhelm the existing settled community. The utility buildings will feature dual-pitched roofs with a ridge height of 4m and will include a bathroom, utility area, and kitchen/day room. The buildings will be constructed using facing brick for the wa.
