Hastings council has reassured residents that the pier is structurally sound after pictures of mangled support beams below the landmark caused a stir on social media. Local resident Michael Shaw took the photograph at low tide, hoping to capture the beauty of Hastings Pier. Instead, he was confronted with mangled support structures and other materials which looked like they had fallen off the landmark.
When sharing the images on a local Facebook page, the post gained a lot of attention and caused quite a stir in the comments - with some people expressing concern about its structural integrity. “We understand that the debris in the photograph posted on Facebook is from when the fire took place, which is visible at low tide.” Hastings Pier was opened in August 1872, designed by Engenius Birch – the man who designed both the Eastbourne Pier and West Pier in Brighton. The pier was a huge success and attracted almost half a million visitors in its first 12 months.
