Virginia coach Brian O’Connor gained his 900th victory in dramatic fashion Saturday as the Cavaliers completed a three-game sweep of No. 20 Stanford with a 9-8, 10-inning victory at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville. UVA (15-11, 6-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied from a four-run deficit and gained a walk-off triumph.
Before that, Lafayette High graduate Luke Hanson’s leadoff single started a two-run bottom of the ninth. Down to the final out in the bottom of the 10th, Aidan Teel doubled to right field, scoring James Nunnallee from first base to give Virginia its third comeback victory of the series and 10th of the season. Stanford fell to 16-9, 5-7.
UVA’s middle-infield tandem of Eric Becker and Henry Godbout each went 3 for 5 to pace the Cavaliers’ offense. Godbout plated the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Becker drove in three runs and scored twice.
O’Connor became the 15th active head coach in Division I with 900 wins. He is one of eight coaches in ACC history with 900 wins while a league member. Virginia Tech 11, No.
16 Wake Forest 8: The Hokies (19-8, 6-5 ACC) jumped to an 8-0 lead and held on for their second victory over the Demon Deacons (20-8, 7-4) in two days, ensuring Tech would win the series in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Hokies have won seven of their last eight games. Garrett Michel homered and drove in three runs for Tech, and Henry Cooke was 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
