With the exception of the third quarter, the Pirates put it all together on Senior Night. Fortunately for West Side, those other three quarters were more than good enough to allow it to roll to a 51-30 victory over Declo on a 3A Fifth District girls basketball game on Friday evening in Dayton. The Pirates (6-15, 5-4) outscored the Hornets (5-16, 1-9) by at least eight points in the first, second and fourth quarters on their way to sweeping the season series with their new district rivals.
Declo won the third quarter, 8-2, but entered the quarter facing a formidable 30-13 deficit. West Side guard Bentley Cundick knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening half, highlighted by a trio of them in the second quarter, to help give her team what proved to be an insurmountable lead. The freshman drained a pair of triples during a 8-0 Pirate run.
Reese Evans buried a 3-ball in the waning second of the second quarter to give the hosts their aforementioned 30-13 advantage heading into the locker room. Declo, which lost to West Side by 10 points at home on Jan. 15, got as close as 32-23 early in the fourth quarter before the Pirates slammed the door with a 14-0 surge.
Miley Cundick, which finished with a team-high nine rebounds, netted six straight points during that game-defining run. Senior Harley Nielsen and Evans punctuated the memorable spurt with back-to-back triples. Nielsen gave West Side its largest lead of the contest at 49-25 when she converted on the second of two shots from .
