POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Members of the Point Pleasant Writers Guild met recently with Gary Grain asking to read an old newspaper column covering a horse race.

He considered it to be elegantly written, and was amazed that the reporter typed his story just as the action took place on the track, even to covering the euthanasia of a horse whose leg broke during the race. As County Chairperson for the Purposeful Reading Committee, Marilyn Clarke wrote an article for the CEOS (Community Educational Outreach Service) newsletter “Club Connections” regarding the most recent CEOS Book Club meeting. Most everyone has probably played the mind game, “What I used to do that I don’t do now.

” Or, perhaps, the question might be “What did I used to do that I can’t do now?” The difference, of course, is that the first is an action of the will, and the second is probably due to physical limitations. Carol Newberry entitled her essay “I Don’t, I Can’t, I Won’t.” Carol no longer walks three miles on the country roads surrounding her house, as she once did.

Why? Because there are no benches on country roads. Nowadays, she walks for minutes, not miles, on her treadmill. Sue Underwood hasn’t let time get the best of her.

She’s busier than she’s ever been and not ready for the rocking chair yet. Joanna Hersman recorded her thoughts, entitled “To Do or Not to Do.” She used to stay up all night and not think a thing about it.

Now she relishes night time for sleeping.
