On this day in 2024, the East Anglian Daily Times reported the grand opening of a new Primark store in Bury St Edmunds. The budget fashion retailer opened its doors for the first time in the former Debenhams store located in the Arc Shopping Centre. Excitement had been building since Primark announced its plans to open in the west Suffolk town back in 2022.
Originally, the store was scheduled to launch at the end of 2023, but delays pushed the opening date back. Philippa Nibbs, Primark director of sales UK, London and the South East, said at the time: "Since we first announced plans to open the store it's been great to see such a positive reaction from the local community and we’re thrilled to confirm the date we will be opening the doors to the people of Bury St Edmunds." In addition to Primark, Everyman Cinema had also opened in the basement of the former Debenhams building, featuring two screens and accommodating 228 people.
