The wild charm of North Yorkshire is always picture perfect whatever the weather and a new creative collaboration is celebrating the bucolic beauty of the area. West Cawthorne is a 26 acre estate overlooking the Vale of Pickering and it has been brought back to life by Rich and Sophie Vermont who bought it in 2020, as Yorkshire Life magazine reported. They then spent a couple of years making extensive renovations before opening to the public in the summer of 2022.

The renovation of the West Cawthorne properties has been a labour of love for Rich and Sophie Vermont Image: David Critchley Photography Now those stunning views are being captured by artist Calum Balding of Kingmaker Studio, who has recently become Artist in Residence at West Cawthorne. Through this artistic connection they want to bring the whole space to life, bringing the outside in and allowing guests to the four holiday properties to fully immerse themselves in the elements. The properties today bear little resemblance to what was there back in 2020.



Rich says: 'The main property was originally a farm and it had been empty for around 13 years so it needed a lot of care and attention. We worked on the house for the first year and then we did all the repairs needed on the barns to convert them to be two holiday cottages and we built two A-Frame cabins as well which is what our business looks like today.' It paid off - the A-Frames were named amongst top 25 cabin and hut stays in The Times last year.
