KANSAS CITY — The Guardians may have lost more than a game on Saturday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez, the engine that makes Cleveland go, left the 4-3 loss to the Royals in the sixth inning with a sprained right wrist. Ramirez apparently suffered the injury when he was thrown out trying to steal second base in the third inning.

Ramirez batted one more time in the game before being replaced by Gabriel Arias.

After Ramirez left the game, the Guardians’ offense fell silent and the bullpen failed to hold 3-1 and 3-2 leads. The Royals won it with two runs in the seventh off Paul Sewald (0-1) and Hunter Gaddis. Maikel Garcia made it 3-3 with a leadoff homer off Sewald.

Cavan Biggio followed with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Dairon Blanco. Sewald retired the next two batters and was replaced by Gaddis to face Bobby Witt Jr. Gaddis struck out Witt in a critical situation in Thursday’s opener, but Witt doubled to left on Saturday for a 4-3 lead following a stolen base by Blanco.

The Guardians took an early 2-0 lead against Seth Lugo, who finished second in the AL Cy Young voting last year. They did so in a methodi.
