Jeff Daniels has lifted the lid on the one unexpected gig that revived his dying acting career at 50 years old. This week the 70-year-old actor reflected on his decades-long Hollywood career during which he has played many diverse roles from serious dark dramas to lighthearted comedies. Out of the many characters he has brought to life, his most well-known role was his portrayal of Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumber (1994) and the sequel Dumb and Dumber To (2014) alongside Jim Carrey .
Defending his performance in the screwball comedy that some have referred to as "low brow," Jeff told Page Six : "Look, it makes people laugh. And the last time I looked, the Greeks are holding up two masks [tragedy and comedy].” After the success of his silly over-the-top role, Jeff admitted that his acting career soon fell off.
In the years to come, Jeff shared that he starred in a number of independent movies that “nobody saw.” Recalling this period of time, he told the news outlet: "I got to, you know, 49, 50, 51. And I was just going, ‘Oh, God.
' Because they don’t tell you when it’s over, right? ...
You’re the last to know.” After hitting a slow point in his career, Jeff embarked on a new venture of performing a one-man show. And while this was a risk, it was the move that put him back on the map.
