There is a rare plant that only grows in certain areas , and it’s being protected by the government. The bayonet spider orchid (Caladenia gladiolata) grows somewhere in Australia , though its exact whereabouts have not been revealed. It was discovered in 2021 by experts with Green Adelaide, South Australia’s first government urban environmental organization, as they were walking through the Mount Lofty Ranges.
Australia – the “world’s fastest continent” – is home to a variety of species that don’t exist anywhere else. More than 80% of the plants, mammals , reptiles and frogs in Australia are found nowhere else in the world, according to the Nature Conservancy Australia. Flora ecologist Jack Casley-Smith told Yahoo News Australia that people are always finding new species, like the bayonet spider orchid.
He said: “In the years following, we’ve still found new plants in the area, so they can be inconspicuous and tricky to spot. It was great in this most recent monitoring to see the orchids flowering. Spider orchids do not always have multiple flowers on the same plant, but if they’re happy and healthy, they can.
” The orchid is only found in the Mount Lofty Ranges and the southern Flingers Ranges, he said. “The exact location of particular orchid species is often deliberately not revealed, to help protect these rare plants,” Casley-Smith added.
