New figures reveal the busy Swindon roads that cause the longest delays to drivers’ journeys. Department for Transport data from December 2024 reveals the average delays on A-roads around England. Four in Swindon have longer delays than the national average, while almost all of them are slower than in the last three years.
The A4289 (Kingshill Road, Bath Road and Devizes Road) has the longest delay of 79.1 seconds per vehicle per mile, which is lower than the 83.4 spvpm figure recorded in 2023 but longer than the 66.
3 and 51.7 figures from 2022 and 2021, respectively. The A4311 (Cirencester Way and the Stratton section of Cricklade Road) is similarly congested, with an average 78-second per vehicle per mile delay in 2024, up from 69.
1 and 51.6 in previous years. The A4313’s average delay has remained consistent, between 58 and 63, with the most recent Ocotal Way stat being 62.
1. The A4198 (Thamesdown Drive)’s average delay is up to 59.7spvpm compared to earlier data of 35, 38.
6, and 47.2 from 2021 to 2023. The A361 (Devizes Road, Wroughton’s High Street and Church Hill) is bucking the trend by having an average delay that has dropped – from 24.
1 to 19.8 seconds per vehicle per mile, making it the only A-road in Swindon whose most recent statistic has both decreased from the year before and is not above the national average. The A420 is relatively uncongested, with an average delay of 32.
2 seconds per vehicle per mile, up slightly from before but nowhere near as high.
