Tuesday, December 10, 2024 The Philippines faced a significant natural disaster as Mount Kanlaon, located on Negros Island, erupted, sending ash plumes and superheated gas down its slopes. This event prompted mass evacuations and disrupted travel, impacting the local community and the broader travel industry. Government officials acted swiftly to ensure the safety of residents while managing the challenges posed by this eruption during the busy holiday season.

Approximately 87,000 residents were being evacuated on Tuesday, following Monday’s eruption. The Office of Civil Defence reported that areas near the volcano’s western and southern slopes were the most affected. In La Castellana town, Negros Occidental, nearly 47,000 people were ordered to leave the 6-kilometer (3.



7-mile) danger zone. By Tuesday morning, more than 6,000 evacuees had taken refuge in emergency shelters or moved to the homes of relatives in safer locations. Mayor Rhumyla Mangilimutan of La Castellana confirmed that evacuation centers were quickly set up to accommodate displaced families.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured the public of the government’s readiness to provide support. He dispatched the social welfare secretary to oversee relief efforts and promised necessary supplies, including food and hygiene packs.
