With Easter fast approaching, many of us will be soon heading out to stock up on Hot Cross Buns to have for breakfast. We tried some from Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl, here's what we thought: With an average score of 4.38 out of 5, Tesco’s Finest Extra Fruity Hot Cross Buns were a firm favourite among the team.
Many loved the strong fruity flavours coming through, as well as the soft and spongy texture, making this the winner overall. Coming in second place were the Waitrose No. 1 Belgian Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, which were a favourite amongst the team's self-proclaimed chocolate aficionados.
Many loved them for their unique twist on a traditional hot cross bun, with a “rich cake-like” texture and strong flavours. However, coming in close in third place in the chocolate stakes was Tesco with their Triple Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, which scored high for their soft texture and the amount of chocolate throughout the buns. The best value hot cross buns priced at under £1.
50 were Lidl with their Deluxe St Clements Hot Cross Buns, which had a particularly tangy taste. This hot cross bun definitely caused the most division between the team, with some absolutely loving the strawberries and cream taste, and others who were not in favour of this unusual flavour. It was very much 50/50.
Another unusual flavour that received mixed views was the Aldi Specially Selected Rhubarb and Custard Hot Cross Buns, with such a strong sweet taste. An honourable mention goes to a more inventi.
