RICHMOND — The Ninigret Park trolls that caused a sensation last year when they came to Charlestown will have company this summer, with the addition of two more of the giant wooden sculptures in Richmond and North Kingstown. Richmond Town Council President Samantha Wilcox said recently the council went forward March 4 with the approval to bring a troll to town. “We are supportive of the project in Richmond,” Wilcox said.
“Richmond is trying to support its ecotourism and this would be a great way for people out of town to come in and explore our beautiful hiking trails.” Danish recycle art activist Thomas Dambo, the creator and designer of trolls Erik Rock and Greta Granite in Ninigret Park as well as others that can be found throughout the world, is collaborating with Zachery Place, who owns Place Construction in Westerly and will be in charge of overseeing all the wood needed for the construction. Place Construction also assisted Dambo during the inaugural troll project in Charlestown.
The heads of the trolls will be shipped around the end of July, and the estimated completion date of the project for both towns will be around the second week of August, after the construction team comes to Rhode Island to assemble a troll in both towns. The trolls coming this summer are considered phase two of a three-phase effort to bring more of the tourism magnets to South County. Phase one involved installing the trolls in Ninigret Park last spring.
Ultimately, the troll exhibit.
