Former tennis stars Sam Querrey and Eugenie Bouchard failed to overcome their opening-round hurdles at the PPA Red Rock Open pickleball tournament at Black Desert Resort, St. George, Utah, on Friday. Jack Sock, who also lost his doubles match, will look to redeem himself in men’s singles when he faces Connor Garnett in the semifinals.
Sock began his singles campaign in spectacular fashion on the first day of the tournament, winning three consecutive matches to win a spot in the semifinals. He was also in contention in doubles and seemed poised for a deep run after he and his mixed doubles partner, Kaitlyn Christian, won their first-round match. However, the duo fell short in the second round, losing to 13th seed Allyce Jones and Travis Rettenmaier.
Earlier, Sock’s men’s doubles campaign, alongside Ivan Jakovljevic, ended in the first round, as they suffered a defeat in under 45 minutes against 15th seed Brandon French and Wyatt Stone. French later paired up with Bouchard in the mixed doubles category, but they fell meekly to Victoria DiMuzio and Roscoe Bellamy. This marked Bouchard’s first-round exit in all three disciplines.
She had earlier lost her women’s doubles match, partnering with Genie Erokhina, in a 31-minute battle against top seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau. Unlike Sock and Bouchard, who were in action from the first day of the tournament, Querrey began his campaign only on Friday, having registered solely for the men’s doubles event wi.
