Lamar’s women’s basketball was undefeated until Thursday when it lost on the road to Southeastern Louisiana. SFA handed the Cardinals their second Southland Conference loss of the season with a 72-66 win at William R. Johnson Coliseum Saturday.
The win is the fourth straight for SFA,which advances to 18-5 overall and 8-4 in SLC play. Lamar is now 14-6 overall and 9-2 in SLC play. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line to score the first point of the game.
A jumper from Sbria Dean and a long two from NJ Weems gave the Cardinals a 4-1 lead. Faith Blackstone knocked down a field goal before R’Mani Taylor did the same on the other end to put Lamar up 6-3. Trinity Moore tied it up with an-old fashioned three-point play before Avery VanSickle drained a three to give SFA a 9-6 lead.
Trinity Moore pulled down a rebound and went back up for two. Dean scored back-to-back two pointers to cut SFA’s lead to one point. Blackstone gave the Ladyjacks some breathing room by going a combined 3-for-4 on a pair of trips to the free-throw line.
Jacei Denley made it a two-point game by firing a shot up before the shot clock expired. The next shot came on the other end before the quarter expired as Hope LeMelle’s three-point buzzer beater gave SFA a 17-12 lead. Traylor-Waker scored the first three points of the second quarter from behind the arc before Weems returned the favor on the other end.
