Saint Patrick’s Day is here, which means beer lovers around the globe will be raising a toast — and maybe even “splitting the G” — with a pint of Guinness in celebration. Though the popular drinking challenge has been around for some time, “splitting the G” tends to pick up traction around March 17, as more people are sipping on the Irish stout. To perfectly execute “splitting the G” on a pint of Guinness, you must drink just enough that the dark portion of the beer and the foam on top evenly split the word Guinness on the glass — specifically, the G.

The catch? You must “split the G” only with the first gulp of the beverage, in order for do the challenge correctly. To celebrate Saint Patrick's Day on Monday, TODAY’s Carson Daly demonstrated for viewers . Using a pint glass emblazoned with the Guinness logo, Carson explained that the first sip of the Irish stout needs to be big enough to make the beer and foam then line up to separate the G in Guinness.

To no avail, Carson’s attempt landed just above the word “Guinness,” seemingly mere centimeters from the G. When he was given a second glass to try again, Carson opted to instead impress his TODAY colleagues by chugging the stout in its entirety. Irish stars Paul Mescal and Neill Horan, English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, as well as Joe Jonas and Jason Momoa, are among the celebrities who have all either been filmed “splitting the G” or have talked about doing so in interviews.

On the same.
