Friday, December 27, 2024 Hong Kong’s travel surge hits a peak with 400 Mainland tours and thrilling daily escapes to Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, boosting regional tourism. The Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Association, Timothy Chui Ting-pong, shared during a radio interview on Friday that over 400 tour groups have been traveling to the mainland daily since last Friday. He also highlighted that Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand have each seen more than 100 tour groups departing daily.

Chui revealed that since last Friday, over one million Hong Kong residents have ventured out of the city. While many joined tours exploring cities in the Greater Bay Area, others traveled to more distant destinations such as Yunnan and other mainland regions. He estimated that up to New Year’s Eve, approximately 400 to 500 tour groups would be embarking on short- and medium-distance tours to the mainland each day, alongside the continued daily departures of over 100 tour groups heading to Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.

During the program, Chui noted a modest rise in the number of Hong Kong residents traveling over Christmas, suggesting that the surge in “revenge travel” following the pandemic has begun to ease. He speculated that many people might now be reserving their plans for the Lunar New Year holidays. He further explained that during the Christmas season, most inbound visitors were from Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines and Thailand, with only a small share of to.
