After Sita has been abducted by Ravana, an anguished Rama and Lakshmana begin to look for Her. Sugreeva was witness to Sita being carried away, and he tells Rama that as Sita was being taken away by Ravana in his vimana, She had dropped Her jewels, wrapping them in Her upper cloth. Sugreeva then shows Rama the jewels She had dropped and asks Him if He can identify them.

Rama identifies Her garment, and Her jewels and draws Lakshmana’s attention to them. Lakshmana replies that he is only familiar with Her anklets, because he has never looked beyond Her feet. So, he has no idea about any of Her other jewels.

This shows us the regard Lakshmana had for Sita. It also shows us that we must seek Her feet and surrender at Her feet. This surrender will not only earn for us Her grace, but also the Lord’s affection.

Parasara Bhattar, describing the Goddess’ eyes, says that even a small glance from Her eyes enriches a person’s life. This is evident from the position of the celestials and mighty kings. Their eyes in turn display their pride in the fact that they have been favoured by Goddess Mahalakshmi.
