Culpeper Minutemen at burning ceremony Members of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution participated in a recent ceremony marking the 249th anniversary of the assault and burning of Norfolk by the British in early 1776. The Norfolk Chapter SAR and the Old Cannonball Society, Children of the American Revolution co-hosted the commemoration Jan. 25 at St.
Paul Episcopal Church in Norfolk. This was a pivotal event during the American Revolutionary War and Virginia’s effort to free herself from Lord Dunmore and Royal rule. Forced to live on ships after the Battle of Great Bridge, and with patriots occupying Norfolk, the British bombarded the city.
Norfolk was eventually burned by the American forces to deny enemy use of the important port. This left Dunmore to wander the waters of the Chesapeake until ultimately driven from Virginia after the Battle of Cricket Hill on Gwynn’s Island. The ceremony included a wreath laying outside under the embedded cannonball.
