Plot Blue Period is a coming-of-age manga and anime series by Tsubasa Yamaguchi that follows Yatora Yaguchi, a high school student who unexpectedly discovers a passion for art. He decides to embark on a challenging journey to enter the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA).
It’s the only public art university in Japan, known for its extremely low acceptance rate. At the story’s beginning, Yatora is a top-performing student who excels in academics but feels empty and directionless. He hangs out with his friends, follows societal expectations, and does what is expected of him rather than pursuing anything personal.
One day, he stumbles upon a painting in his school’s art room that captivates him. The depth of expression in the artwork stirs something in him. He tries his hand at painting and realizes that art is a way for him to truly express himself.
Despite having no formal training, Yatora decides to apply to the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai). Japan’s most competitive art.
