The Australian broke through in impressive fashion at the Houston Open , holding off world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Gary Woodland by a shot despite several nervy moments down the stretch, including a water ball on 16 and a tense putt from off the back of the green at last. But so talented is the social media sensation from Perth, that many experts had tipped him to accomplish big things sooner than nine years after he won the US Junior to announce himself as a star on the rise.
His four previous professional victories are not to be sneezed at, however. Lee’s maiden triumph at the 2020 Vic Open, a DP World Tour co-sanctioned event on home soil, was seen at the time as the fire starter for a budding career that had already ventured abroad. The Covid-19 pandemic shutting the world down a month later forced him to his pause, but he made up for lost time in 2021 by truly announcing himself on the world stage.
Lee defeated Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry with a nine-foot birdie putt at the first playoff hole after a streak of six straight birdies during the final round to win the Scottish Open, the preceding event to the British Open. Two years later, he also won on the Asian Tour and then came home to join.
