‘A ll humans are fascinated with life and death and the interplay between the two,” the artist Gary McQueen believes. Gary, who worked at Alexander McQueen from 2005 to 2012, finally as head textile designer for men’s ready-to-wear, has recently held an art exhibition that includes a series of silkscreen skulls, a motif his uncle Lee Alexander McQueen was famously fond of. The designer used skulls on everything, from T-shirts and jewellery to highly covetable scarves.
“It’s a nod to the time that I worked there,” Gary says of his own art. He calls himself a digital sculptor, and his wizardry with imagery is outstanding. “I created hundreds of skulls done in various ways.
There’s a quality that refers back to Lee and his fascination with death. That’s something I wanted to pay tribute to.”.
