Uganda is targeting a significant tourism revenue boost of $5.2 billion by 2028, aiming to attract 3.5 million visitors annually within the next five years.
This ambitious goal means the country plans to nearly double its current annual tourist numbers, which stand at 1.5 million, within the next three years. A central part of Uganda’s strategy is the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (Poate), an event first launched in 2024, which will return this year from May 21 to 24.
The event will feature 70 international buyers and over 5,000 trade visitors, aiming to solidify Uganda’s status as a top travel destination. Additionally, the government has introduced familiarization trips (FAMs) to provide global buyers with firsthand exposure to Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes and diverse attractions. To further increase both domestic and international interest, Uganda has rolled out the Tell Your Story campaign.
This initiative encourages Ugandans to share their personal travel experiences on social media, helping to promote the country’s hidden gems and cultural heritage. The campaign’s goal is to amplify local voices and inspire potential visitors to explore Uganda’s rich offerings. In addition to marketing initiatives, UTB chairperson Pearl Kakooza reveals that Uganda is also focusing on attra.
