The New York Yankees officially begin the regular season this week, and they're looking to make one more addition to the lineup before Opening Day arrives. With so many injuries hitting both sides of the ball in New York, the depth on offense has been depleted a bit. This is especially true in the case of having some right-handed protection in the lineup — a rarity for most teams, especially the Yankees.
Typically, teams struggle to find left-handed pop. That isn't the case for the Yankees this time around. Instead, the Yankees have a luxury of left-handed bats and are in search of some right-handed slugging, general manager Brian Cashman confirmed over the weekend.
"I feel like I’d be happier if I can line up some choices for our manager,” Cashman said via The New York Post . “I think some choices have emerged here in camp and then it comes down to if those choices in camp are better than anything that might exist outside that you could either trade for, that you’re comfortable enough giving what it would take to get or obviously measuring that versus the options that might get the bad word in another camp they’re not making it and all of a sudden we’re competing for those services.” The injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu have put the Yankees in a bind.
Neither player has a timetable for return and both are expected to begin the season on the injured list. There's a chance that Stanton misses the entire season if he elects to get surgery on his bil.
