Jessica Biel ’ s time on 7th Heaven wasn’t always a slam dunk. The actor—who starred as Mary Camden in the drama series—reflected on her awkward audition for the role, including how she used her character’s love for basketball to sell her performance. “I remember thinking she was a cool character because she was a basketball player and I was an athlete.
I was like, ‘Oh, I can connect this,’” Jessica explained on the Catching Up With The Camdens podcast March 31, adding she was 13 at the time. “I remember Mary was spinning a basketball on her finger, so I did that at the audition without a basketball.” The 47-year-old—mom to sons Silas , 10, and Phineas , 4, with husband Justin Timberlake —then noted that decision was “a choice,” before visibly cringing at the memory.
“Like, I was spinning an invisible ball,” she joked to hosts Beverley Mitchell , David Gallagher , and Mackenzie Rosman , who were also her on-screen siblings in the show . “I kind of feel embarrassed about that, but maybe that was effective.” And it certainly was.
Jessica went on to star as Mary, the oldest daughter of seven siblings, in the series for six seasons from 1996 to 2006. She then limited her appearance on 7th Heaven to star in other popular works, including 2003’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre . Despite branching out her acting roles, she occasionally returned to 7th Heaven for its final seasons.
And while her brief appearance was a nice touch to the show’s evolvin.
