Article content On its launch in 2017, Genesis very publicly stated that the G70 was a sport sedan intended to take on the previous-generation BMW 3-Series . Not the current, contemporary 3-Series, but the old one. The implication was that, by focusing on crossovers, the Bavarians weren’t making the 3er the best it could be any more, leaving an opening for Genesis to swoop in.

One drive, and the point needed to be conceded: the G70 was a great blend of athleticism and luxury. Thing is, that was eight years ago now. Since that time Genesis as a brand has established itself firmly in a new space, shouldering aside Infiniti if not quite pushing past Lexus .



Its products feel genuinely luxurious, both in interior appointment and driving experience, and the incoming GV90 full-sized electric crossover should make for an impressive flagship. This is to say nothing of Genesis’ burnishing its badge with the Magma high-performance vehicles . The G70’s been there from the beginning, with a refresh in 2022, and it’s thus a little long in the tooth.

Like BMW, Genesis has been spending the R&D dollars refining the vehicles that support the bottom line: crossovers. The GV70 and GV80 feel like the money’s been well-spent, but what does that mean for the G70? Aimed at an older target right from the get go, does it still have great sport sedan chops?
