KENOSHA — The Southport Sound will play a big band show May 8 at The Stella Ballroom and Hotel, 5706 Eighth Ave. in Downtown Kenosha. The performance is 7 to 9 p.

The group is back at the venue May 8. The event is free and open to the public. The band’s staple repertoire from the swing era includes music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

The group also performs doo-wop, disco, Latin and classic rock 'n' roll pieces. The May 8 performance opens with “Johnny’s Theme” and will include tunes featuring the trumpet section, such as “Cherry Pink,” “In a Sentimental Mood” and “Lonely Bull.” The evening may also include an impromptu version of “Happy Birthday” to all those celebrating birthdays in May.

Established nine years ago by musician, educator and U.S. Navy member John Sorensen, the band is now led from the guitar section by local musician Terry Peterson.

The band features vocalist Hannah Sorensen-Mack, John Sorensen’s daughter. Wednesday, she'll be featured on “It had Better be Tonite” and “Night and Day.” “At our open rehearsals, we try out new material as well as polish some of our standards,” Peterson said.

“We have been so fortunate to find a beautiful rehearsal venue at The Stella Hotel and Ballroom in which to showcase our talented musicians." The Stella Ballroom includes plenty of chairs,.
