It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Denise Facione Hayes. She was 69. She passed away peacefully in Carbondale, Colorado, on Jan.
23, 2025. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on Dec. 13, 1955, Denise made a lasting impact on the lives of those around her, particularly through her decades of dedication to early childhood education.
Denise’s professional journey began in the hotel industry in Vail, but she found her true calling when she transitioned into early childhood education. For many years, Denise poured her heart and soul into nurturing the minds and spirits of young children. She began as the director at Growing Years Preschool, and later opened Columbine Kids Preschool in Basalt, where she continued to create a safe, loving and nourishing environment for children for over 20 years.
Denise’s work touched the lives of countless families in the Roaring Fork Valley, and she was beloved for her kindness, patience and unwavering commitment to the children she cared for. In 1981, Denise married her high school sweetheart, Rick Hayes, and together they built a beautiful life and family in the Roaring Fork Valley. Denise was a lover of dance, and her joy was contagious — especially when she was belly dancing, a passion that brought her much happiness.
Her spirit was full of life, and her warmth will be remembered by all who knew her. Denise had a remarkable sense of humor and a contagious laughter that could light up any room. Her quick wit and ability to fin.
