Kanpur: Queer Welfare Foundation (LGBTQ+community) in the city is demanding more representation and rights ahead of Lok Sabha elections. As the Lok Sabha elections are approaching, citizens across the city are expressing their demands and expectations from their elected representatives. Among them, members of the LGBTQ+community are also advocating for a platform that promotes their development and integration into society.

Anuj Pandey, founder/director of Kanpur Queer Welfare Foundation said, “I have been living in the city since the last 15 years and working in an NGO as a social activist since 2018, however, we don’t get the respect that common people get,” he said adding that “I want to vote for the party that works for our community.” He further said, “For us, every vote matters and accordingly, the rights of every individual matter, no matter which community they belong to, politicians should work for their rights. Many educated people are not getting proper jobs as per their dreams/profession and are forced to beg and work as sex workers.

We hope that our MPs will give us a platform where we can grow and make our place in the society.” Ignoring a marginalized society and avoiding doing anything for them is tantamount to cornering them, said another LGBTQ member. “Not a single candidate for the Lok Sabha has come forward to discuss and address issues and obstacles faced by this community.

Those who stand with us, speak for us, will get our votes in large.
