Berhampur : The opposition BJP and Congress candidates on Wednesday slammed the BJD govt over the alleged gangrape in Ganjam. “We are very shocked and ashamed to learn that such a crime took place in the chief minister’s home district. The incident indicates the women are not safe in the state,” Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy, BJP’s MP candidate for Berhampur.

“Law and order has collapsed in the state. The incident is the result of an inefficient BJD govt and exposed the real picture of empowerment of women,” said Panigrahy. Deepak Patnaik, Congress candidate for Berhampur assembly seat, said the gang-rape incident is shameful.

“A number of such incidents took place in the state and now it took place in Ganjam,” he said. Sanghamitra Dalei, president of the Ganjam BJD women’s wing, said, “Police took prompt action and arrested five persons.” She said the opposition should not politicise such a sensitive incident and allow police to do their job.

“The chief minister has time and again said persons involved in any crime will get punishment as per the law,” she said.
