An always-on video portal is now linking New York City and Dublin, after the unveiling of two technology sculptures yesterday. Developed by Portals.org, the technology sculptures feature giant circular videoconferencing windows which rely on Video Windows software.

Social media pictures also show systems integrator AVI-SPL at work on the project. Each of the two city portals features a live stream from the portal in the other city, allowing real-time interaction between New Yorkers, Dubliners and visitors to the cities. The NYC Portal is located near the city's famous Flatiron building while the Dublin Portal faces the city's main road, O'Connell Street, with a view of the GPO building and the Spire.



The Portal connection between the cities will run until at least the autumn of 2024, with scheduled programming, including cultural performance at each portal that can be enjoyed by people in the other city via the livestream. Programming will kick off in mid-May with a visual programme celebrating New York Design Week. Dublin lord mayor Daithí de Róiste said the city's portal would also connect to other portals in Poland, Brazil and Lithuania from July.

Portals linking Vilnius, Lithuania and Dublin, Poland were launched in 2021 by the Portals not-for-profit- initiative, with media coverage of the link reaching an audience of more than 1.5 billion people.
